The first official meeting of the Alpine Historical Society was held on April 8, 1962 at Sky Mesa Ranch, the home of Clayburn and Bea LaForce. Twenty-two people attended and elected the following officers: Ralph Walker, President; Lenore Oakleigh Lusk, Vice President; and Bea LaForce, Secretary and Treasurer. For the next 34 years, the members of the Society kept photos, important papers and documents in their own homes. Then, in 1996, John Colby DeWitt, a long-time land owner in Alpine, in his Will made a condition of the sale of his property to a developer to be contingent upon the donation of Dr. Sophronia Nichols historic home and carriage house, and an acre of land surrounding it to the Alpine Historical Society.
