Join us as Mary shares heartfelt memories of growing up in Alpine during the 1940s, a time when neighbors were like family and simple moments created lifelong memories. Through stories of resilience, community, and a lifetime of accomplishments, Mary reminds us why Alpine has always been a special place to call home.
The Alpine Historical Society is pleased to welcome local beekeeper Richard "The Bee Guy" Edwords for an entertaining and educational presentation celebrating one of Alpine's most important historical industries—beekeeping. Long before Alpine became the community we know today, honey production helped shape the area's economy. In the mid-1800s, pioneer beekeeper John Stewart Harbison transformed the region into one of California's leading honey-producing centers, earning Alpine an important place in beekeeping history. Richard will explore this fascinating heritage while showing how beekeeping continues to play a vital role today.

DICK FISHER GROWING UP ON ALCATRAZ

Imagine being a child on “The Rock,” living as the son of a correctional officer stationed at Alcatraz during the 1930s. Dick spent 3 . years on the island, experiencing its notorious atmosphere firsthand. But his story doesn’t
stop there—after serving in the military, Dick returned to Alcatraz in the 1950s, living there again while attending
college at San Jose State.
For over two decades, Dick has captivated audiences nationwide with his extraordinary experiences. He’s been
featured on San Diego’s Channel 6 News and highlighted in a 2018 San Diego Union-Tribune article. Each year, he
volunteers as a Ranger at the Alcatraz Reunion, sharing his unique insights.
Now, he’s bringing his story to Alpine! Through vivid photos and compelling firsthand accounts, Dick will take you
behind the scenes of life on this legendary island.

The History of the Kumeyaay Nation

Today, the Kumeyaay tribal members are divided into 12 separate bands: Barona, Campo, Ewiiaapaayp, Inaja-Cosmit, Jamul, LaPosta, Manzanita, Mesa Grande, San Pasqual, Santa Ysabel, Sycuan and Viejas. Ral Christman will be sharing the early history of these tribes.
